As per a report from ANSA news agency, pro-Russian hackers have attacked websites of several Italian institutions, including the senate.
A hacker group called “Killnet” has claimed responsibility for attacking Italy’s National Health Institute (ISS) as well as the Automobile Club d’Italia.
The websites of the senate, Italy’s upper house of parliament, and the ISS are now back online.
In a tweet, senate speaker Elisabetta Casellati said the attack had not caused any damage.
“These are serious incidents, which should not be underestimated,” tweeted Casellati.
In a statement Italy’s defence ministry said, its website was “due to long-planned maintenance activities ongoing on the website”.
According to a source at the Italian cyber security agency, work in ongoing to restore the websites, suggesting “the first appropriate technical countermeasures”.
An investigation is ongoing, said the Italian police.
