As per a report from the Sunday Telegraph, Britain could build up to 7 new nuclear power stations as part of a response to energy security stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said British Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.
“There is a world where we have six or seven sites in the UK” by 2050, said Kwarteng.
British ministers have already agreed to set up a new development vehicle, the Great British Nuclear, to identify sites, and cut red tape to speed up the planning process; private firms will run each site.
Britain’s new energy security strategy, scheduled to be unveiled this coming week on Thursday, is expected to commit the government to supporting the construction of at least two new large-scale nuclear plants by 2030 in addition to small modular reactors.
