Chinese state backed hacker group APT 27 targeting German companies: Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution

In a statement Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) said, China’s state backed hacking group APT 27 which since long is suspected of launching attacks on Western government agencies, is now targeting German companies in sectors including technology and pharmaceuticals.

Along with stealing trade secrets and intellectual property, the Chinese hackers may be trying to penetrate customers’ and service providers’ networks to infiltrate several companies at once, said the BfV in a circular to companies.

Way back in 2019, the BfV had pointed out the group’s acronym APT 27 is an alias for a Chinese hacker group also known as the “Emissary Panda,” which is believed to target foreign embassies and sectors that are considered of critical importance.

In 2021, the United States and its allies had accused Beijing of carrying out a campaign of global cyberespionage.
