The strengthening of bilateral ties between China and North Korea was good for both countries and regional peace amidst an environment where there is “serious and complicated” international affairs, agreed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping, claimed a report published by the North Korean state media KCNA said on Friday.
This report was published as Xi was on a two day state visit to North Korea with the aim of furthering the relationships with Pyongyang even as the sop called rouge country continues to face pressure because of sanctions by the United Nations because of its over its nuclear and missile programmes and the failed negotiations with the United States over denuclearization.
This is the first time that a Chinese leader has made an official visit to North Korea in over 14 years and assumes importance because Xi and the United States President Donald Trump are scheduled to meet at the G20 summit in Osaka while an acrimonious trade war rages between the US and China,
The KCNA report said that the visit by Xi was “crucial” to exhibit the changing nature of the relationship between the two countries to the world even as many analysts view the visit of the Chinese president to be one that could bring in fresh support for North Korea’s floundering.
According to China’s state run media Xinhua a political settlement of the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula has been “an inevitable trend”, agreed Beijing and Pyongyang, said Xi and that the two countries want to continue to hold peace talks.
KCNA said that the need for close strategic communication and deepening of cooperation in various areas was agreed to by the two leaders.
While praising the efforts towards denuclearization by Pyongyang, Xi hoped that it would be possible for North Korea and the US to hold talks on the issue and that the talks would turn out to be successful.
Some weapons tests have been conducted by North Korea after the breakdown of the negotiations between Trump and Kim in Hanoi earlier this year. North Korea has also further warned of “truly undesired consequences” in case more flexibility is not shown by the US.
According to KCNA, Kim looking out for a political solution to the Korean Peninsula issue was supported to by Xi said China at a dinner banquet on Thursday and added that China was also supporting the establishment of a great environment for self-development through “a new strategic route”,
To further illustrate the growing closeness of relationship between China and North Korea, Xi. Alongside Kim, also watched a mass gymnastics and arts performance titled “Undefeated Socialism”.
