PayPal protests North Carolina’s law that targets the LGBT community

North Carolina has enacted this law to safe guard children against acts, including molestations.

With North Carolina passing a controversial law which targets lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, PayPal Holdings Inc. which had plans on investing $3.6 million in the state, cancelled its plans in protest.

The move is the first by a major business, after North Carolina enacted a law that has specifically targeted the members of the LGBT community. As per the newly enacted law, people who use public bathrooms, locker rooms in schools and such public facilities can only do so if their gender matches that of their birth certificate, rather than their gender identity.

The newly law has been wildly interpreted as an attack on the rights of the LGBT community.

“The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture,” said Dan Schulman, PayPal’s CEO in a statement.

On March 29, founders and CEOs of more than a 100 companies, including, Alphabet, Apple, Twitter, have written a letter urging North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory to repeal the act.

Earlier in March, PayPal had announced its plans of opening a operation centre in Charlottle which would provide employment to 400 skilled workers. By the end of 2017, the company had plans of investing $3.6 million, as per a news release from the governor’s website.

The North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest, has defended the law, in spite of PayPal’s protest.

“If our action in keeping men out of women’s bathrooms and showers protected the life of just one child or one woman from being molested or assaulted, then it was worth it,” said Forest in a statement.

As for PayPal it is said to be looking for another site for its operation centre and has yet to decide where that will be.
