In a statement a senior Chinese diplomat said, Beijing wants to expand the group of emerging economies known as BRICS.

The development will mark the first shake up of the bloc in over a decade.

The bloc was formed in 2009 and comprises of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

South Africa joined BRICS in 2010.

“China proposes to start the BRICS expansion process, explore the criteria and procedures for the expansion, and gradually form a consensus,” said Wang Yi, China’s state councillor and foreign minister, during an online meeting of BRICS foreign ministers.
