In a tweet Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk said, it is “still working through a lot of challenges with the government” in India, in response to a question on a potential launch date for its electric cars in the country.
Last year, Tesla planned on selling imported cars in the Indian market and had lobbied the government to slash import taxes on electric vehicles (EVs) before its entry into the market.
Musk didn’t clarify on what those “challenges” could be.
Tesla’s demand to slash taxes on imported cars have triggered a slew of objections from several domestic rivals who opine that such a move deter investment in domestic manufacturing.
The Indian government also want Tesla to commit to local manufacturing before considering any tax breaks however Tesla has indicated it wants to first experiment with imports.
Tesla’s rival, Mercedes-Benz, is slated to start assembling operations of its electric vehicle flagship, S-Class sedan, the EQS, in India later this year.
