In a statement China’s Geely Holding said, Zeekr, its premium electric mobility brand, will collaborate with Alphabet Inc’s self-driving unit Waymo to make electric vehicles for the latter, which will be deployed as fully autonomous ride-hailing vehicles across the United States.
“The vehicles will be designed and developed at Zeekr’s facility in Sweden, and later integrated with Waymo’s self-driving technology,” said Geely.
Waymo has published concept images of the self-driving vehicles which show a roomy, low-to-the-ground minivan which seats about five riders, with sliding doors on each side serving as entryways.
Incidentally, Waymo is the only fully driverless taxi service in the United States. Since its launch a year ago, it has served thousands of people in Phoenix.
The partnership with Zeekr will help Waymo expand its driverless ride-hailing service in the face of increased competition; it also acts as a vehicle for the Chinese company to enter the US market.
