In a statement Argentina’s Ministry of Defence said, it is looking to purchase multipurpose fighter jets for up to $664 million.
According to a source with knowledge of the negotiations, fighter planes from the United States, Russia, China, Israel and South Korea are being considered.
The acquisition process “is in the technical-economic and financial evaluation stage of five alternatives,” said the ministry in an official statement.
The development comes at a time when the country is in the midst of a severe economic crisis exacerbated by the coronavirus-induced COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Defence Ministry, the financing for the planned acquisition of the jets was outlined in the 2022 budget proposal which is scheduled to come up for voting in the congress, where the governing coalition has a majority, in the coming weeks.
