Amazon to spend more than $500M as one-time bonus for frontline workers

In a statement Amazon.com Inc said, it has decided to spend more than $500 million as a one-time bonus for its front-line employees in the United States who are working through the holiday season midst the coronavirus-induced COVID-19 pandemic.

Full-time staff at Amazon’s U.S. operations who are employed from December 1 to December 31 will receive a $300 bonus; those who are working part time will receive a bonus of $150, said Amazon.com Inc in a blog post.

The development comes at a time when Amazon.com Inc’s peers, including Home Depot Inc and Walmart Inc spending millions in bonuses to compensate staff for catering to a surge in online shopping during the pandemic.

Earlier this year in June, Amazon had also spent $500 million as a one-time bonus to its front-line employees and partners. Amazon.com Inc is facing growing scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers on whether it is doing enough to protect its staff from COVID-19.
