In a significant development, U.S. Attorney General William Barr authorized federal prosecutors to pursue investigations into “substantial allegations of voting and vote tabulation irregularities,” while urging prosecutors not to chase “fanciful or far-fetched” claims.
Barr’s letter to prosecutors marks the first time he has addressed President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of widespread voter fraud; the 2020 U.S. Presidential election results are now marching down a legal path with Trump initiating litigation proceedings against alleged, unsubstantiated, election malpractices.
The development comes several hours after Barr met with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who on Monday stated, Trump was well within his rights to look into charges of “irregularities” in last week’s election. “I authorize you to pursue substantial allegations of voting and vote tabulation irregularities prior to the certification of elections in your jurisdictions in certain cases, as I have already done in specific instances,” wrote Barr in the letter to federal prosecutors and to the FBI.
