JAMA Study Finds Just Two Weeks Taken For Recovery For Most Kids With Covid-19

According to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics on Wednesday, only mild symptoms are developed in most kids infected with the coronavirus and the infected children typically recover completely within just two weeks.

The study however also noted that some of the children got seriously ill such as a 13 month old child who had to be admitted into intensive care.

1,065 Covid-19 patients, mostly in China, under age 19, were analyzed by researchers for the report. They also examined studies that were published between December 1 and March 3. Among the number of [patient cases studies, at least 444 of the patients were younger than age 10, while 553 were between the ages 10 to 19 years.

The researchers said that virtually no symptoms were produced by most children that were reported to have been infected which meant that were asymptomatic or only had mild respiratory symptoms, namely fever, dry cough, and fatigue. Among the many children that were hospitalized, only supportive care was required by most kids and that did not include oxygen or assisted ventilation said the researchers of the study. While one death was reported in the 10-19 age range, no children under age 9 died due to the infection.

However the report also noted that severe complications gad developed for a 13-month-old infant with Covid-19 infection. Vomiting, diarrhea, fever and pneumonia were the ailments that the child had and the situation was complicated because of shock and kidney failure that necessitated intensive care, according to the researchers. They also noted one study that described how a 30-hour-old newborn had developed breathing problems after acquiring the infection from the mother.

“Unlike adults, children do not seem to be at higher risk of severe illness based on age and sex,” wrote Riccardo Castagnoli, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pavia and a lead author of the analysis. “However, at present, no data are available on the role of comorbidities in the severity of pediatric COVID-19.”

The conclusions of the study are in line with those from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention as well as those studies from China form where the novel coronavirus pandemic originated about four months ago and has now spread globally causing a pandemic. More than 2.5 million people have been infected with the disease. .

Only mild symptoms such as fever or cough were developed by the majority of pediatric patients in the United States, found a CDC report that was published earlier this month. The report also noted that only a handful of the infected children had to be hospitalized or their conditions got worse.

Close examination of 2,143 cases of children with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 which were initially reported to the Chinese CDC between January 16 and February 8 was done in a recent study published online in the journal Pediatrics. Severe or critical for m of the disease had been developed by a number of children in China, that study found, and there was death of one child because of Covid-19.  Over 90 per cent of the infected children were asymptomatic, mild or moderate cases. Just about 6 per cent of the children were severe or critical, compared with 18.5 per cent in adults.
