Britain’s whiskey exports to the U.S. threatened by Trump’s additional trade tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on $4 billion EU goods, including on Britain’s Scotch whisky, Italy’s cheese and olives.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to end his trade dispute with the European Union. Washington has threatened to impose tariffs on $4 billion European goods which include Scotland’s most famous export.

Washington increased the pressure on Europe to levy tariffs on additional EU goods, including Scotch whisky, olives, and Italian cheese.

“Exports of Scotch Whisky to the US have been zero-tariff for 20 years so it is disappointing that (it) has been drawn into this dispute,” said SWA’s spokesman. “The Scotch Whisky industry has consistently opposed the imposition of tariffs, which harms economies on both sides of the Atlantic which depend on trade for their continued prosperity … We continue to urge the UK government, the EU and the US government to resolve this situation.”

Britain had exported whiskey worth $5.7 billion (4.7 billion pounds) in 2018, its biggest food and drink export ahead of salmon, chocolate and cheese, with the U.S. being the industry’s biggest export market.

The industry is dominated by multinationals like Pernod Ricard and Diageo and has been an export sector for centuries.

Scotland is home to more than 120 malt and grain distilleries and is the biggest whisky producer in the world.
