Attempts are being made by the U.S. and the U.K to prevent Russia from hosting the Football World Coup this summer, alleged Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
Their “main aim” was to “take the World Cup out of Russia” she said while giving a lengthy interview with a Russian TV channel.
Following the acquisitions by the U.K. against Russia of attempting the murder of a former double agent with nerve gas, the European nation has been attempting to punish Russia for the act.,
As part of the that response form the Britain, the World Cup would not be attended by the Royal Family.
The World Cup in Russia has been equated with the 1936 the Olympcs of Nazi Germany by the U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. Further the cup has been called to be either postponed or moved by at least one opposition MLA in the U.K.
Despite the calls for postponement and shifting of the World Cup, there has not been any calls for the English football team to be withdrawn from the prestigious championship which is slated to begin in June this year.
The issue of the alleged poisoning in Salisbury on 4 March of the former double agent and Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia has resulted in the expulsion of dozens of diplomats from both sides of the divide.
On Friday evening, about 170 Russian diplomats and their family members left Washington in the latest move on that front.
On the other hand, the U.S. consulate at St Petersburg in Russia is also closing down after Russia announced the expulsion of 60 diplomats from the country.
“It’s my impression that all they care about is taking the World Cup out of Russia,” said Ms Zakharova while speaking to Russia’s Channel 5 TV.
“They will use any means. Their minds are only on that football and God forbid it should touch a Russian football field.”
Al the allegations of the use of nerve gas and assassination attempt has bene denied by Russia.
While Mr Skripal daughter has gained consciousness and is stable, Mr Skripal has bene reported to critically ill but stable.
A request for Russian consular access to Yulia, who is a Russian citizen, would be considered, said the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
It has nearly been a month that the poisoning row has been going on between the countries. U.K has stuck to its acquisition of Russian involvement in the poisoning of the Skripals.
A warning over “a situation that is similar, to a large extent, to what we lived during the Cold War” was issued by UN secretary general Antonio Guterres on Thursday.
