Rex Wayne Tillerson used alias account to discuss Exxon’s impact on climate change

Exxon Mobil failed to disclose Rex Wayne Tillerson’s usage of an alias e-mail address for relevant communication at Exxon Mobil.

Eric Schneiderman, NY Attorney General has disclosed, Rex Wayne Tillerson the former chairman and chief executive of Exxon Mobil Corp who currently serves as the country’s Secretary of States, used an alias email address while working at Exxon Mobil Corp, to send and receive information related to climate change and other matters.

According to the Attorney General’s office Tillerson had used an alias email address under the pseudonym “Wayne Tracker” from at least 2008 through 2015.

A letter to this effect was sent by Schneiderman’s office to the New York state judge who is overseeing Schneiderman’s investigation into whether Exxon misled shareholders and the public about climate change.

“The email address,, is part of the company’s email system and was put in place for secure and expedited communications between select senior company officials and the former chairman for a broad range of business-related topics,” said Alan Jeffers, Exxon’s spokesman in a statement.

Schneiderman’s letter reveals that Exxon had not previously disclosed the alias account. The letter requested the judge to order Exxon to explain whether documents from the “Wayne Tracker” email and 34 additional accounts assigned to other Exxon executives and board members have been preserved.

The letter further states that while Exxon had produced some 60 documents which mentioned the “Wayne Tracker” email, it however failed to disclose that it was used by Tillerson for communications at Exxon.

“Exxon’s top executives, and in particular, Mr. Tillerson, have made multiple representations that are at the center of OAG’s (attorney general’s office) investigation of potentially false or misleading statements to investors and the public,” reads Schneiderman’s letter.

The case is People of the State of New York v PricewaterhouseCoopers and Exxon Mobil Corporation, New York State Supreme Court, New York County, No. 451962/2016.
