If the order comes through, Boeing will have to up its game and significantly reduce delivery delays which has been plaguing it for a while now. Alternatively, a bigger capacity aircraft should make more economic sense.
Bloomberg has reported citing sources familiar with the matter at hand, Boeing Co has emerged as the front-runner for Singapore Airlines’ order of at least thirty five wide-body aircrafts whose combined price is placed $13.8 billion at list prices.
If Singapore Airlines were to go ahead with this option it would lose out on the Airbus Group’s group future offering of a bigger version of the A350 aircraft which is likely to make the economics of air travel a lot lighter for carriers.
The Airbus Group has put its plans for a bigger version of the A350 on hold due to uncertainty over demand for bigger wide-bodied jets.
Sources have disclosed that Singapore Airlines is said to be looking at the top 20 models of Boeing’s 777, which includes the 406 seater 777-9, over the stretched version of the Airbus A350.
Singapore Airlines is also poised to place an order for at least 19 of Boeing’s Dreamliner jets aka Boeing 787-10.
The placing of the order is likely to be unveiled later this week.
In a statement released to the press, Singapore Airlines disclosed that it has had discussions with aircraft manufacturers on a regular basis and has let them know its requirements for its fleet.
“Such discussions are confidential until we have a firm deal to announce”, said Singapore Airlines in its statement.
When asked to respond to requests for comments, Boeing declined comment.
In its review of aircrafts, Singapore Airlines has also seen the twin-engine 777 which has a carrying capacity of 450 passengers, a load which previously was handled by Boeing’s four-engine jumbo jets only.
