Theresa May clears first legislative hurdle with her Brexit plans intact

With a clear majority, this first step was expected to be smooth sailing. In the next, she will have to move more deftly so as to not expose her Brexit strategy before negotiations begin.

In a significant first step that was expected to be smooth sailing for British Prime Minister Theresa May, the British Parliament has given the thumbs up for the Brexit Process thus paving the way for May’s government to launch to launch the Brexit process by the end of March.

The bill is likely to complete the legislative process by March 7.

British lawmakers voted by 498 to 114 in favour of allowing the bill to move to the next legislative stage.

Scottish Fallout

Pro-Scottish nationalists had earlier tried to throw out the bill.

Stephen Gethins, the Europe spokesman for the Scottish National Party the passing of the first step of the bill as “a devastating act of sabotage on Scotland’s economy”.

In the June 23 referendum of 2016, a majority of voters from Scotland and Northern Ireland had voted to remain within the EU. Voters from Wales and England had wanted to get out.

47 lawmakers from the opposition Labour Party defied party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who had pledged his party’s support for the bill, at this stage, voted against the bill.

Next week, Labour and the opposition parties will now try to amend the bill in order to access greater control and information surrounding the Brexit negotiations.
