An investigation by the U.S. Navy is in full swing. It wouldn’t be surprising if the findings of the investigation point a finger at the usual suspects.
In a major security breach, hackers managed to gain sensitive information, including Social Security Numbers, of 134,386 former and current sailors, said the U.S. Navy.
As per preliminary findings, a laptop used by an employee of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services, working on a U.S. Navy contract was hacked. On Oct. 27, Hewlett Packard had informed the U.S. Navy of the breach with affected sailors being notified of it in the coming weeks.
“The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously – this is a matter of trust for our sailors,” said Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Admiral Robert Burke said in a statement.
“At this stage of the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest misuse of the information that was compromised,” reads a statement the U.S. Navy.
