Ford to create its 2nd largest technological setup in Chennai, South India

The centre, set to be operational in early 2019, will include labs and test facilities as well as teams working on financial data analytics.

Ford Motors Co has disclosed it will be investing $195 million (13 billion rupees) in business and technology centres in Chennai, India over the next five years. This strategic investment will help boost the development of new designs, products, mobility solutions and provide improved business services.

Till date, Michigan-based Ford has already invested $2 billion in India. The company has now disclosed, it will be further hiring 3,000 people apart from bringing in 9,000 from other centres, to staff this facility in the southern city of Chennai.

Ford Motors expects the facility to be up and running by early 2019.

India with its emerging middle class, is a vibrant market wherein small yet powerful cars from brands such as Hyundai Motors Co and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd dominate the market.

The upcoming Chennai centre, will be Ford’s second largest technology setup, outside its global headquarters. It will include testing facilities for components and vehicles as well as laboratories, all of which will help propel Ford to test its future product offerings in the country.

According to HIS Automotive, India is set to become the third largest automotive market in the world by 2020. Clearly, Ford Motors is eyeing a bigger share of that pie.

“India is not only a vibrant market for cars and new mobility ideas, it also is rich with talent, technical expertise and ingenuity,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford, in a statement.

The company’s statement went on to add, the Chennai centre will include teams who will be working on advanced financial analysis and future data analytics for the company.
