In a video message posted on YouTube, Anonymous said, “This marks the start of a 30-day campaign against [Greece’s] central bank sites across the world.”
Activist hacking group, Anonymous has begun attacking Greek’s central bank with an official from the bank saying the cyberattack has disrupted the service to the bank’s website.
“The attack lasted for a few minutes and was successfully tackled by the bank’s security systems. The only thing that was affected by the denial-of-service attack was our web site,” said an official from Greek’s central bank on the condition of anonymity.
The hacking group originated in 2003 and since its inception has adopted the Guy Fawkes mask as their symbol. The mask is an adaptation from the popular movie V for Vengeance. It is a stylised portrayal of an oversized smile, featuring red cheeks and a wide moustache upturned at both ends.
“Olympus will fall. A few days ago we declared the revival of operation Icarus. Today we have continuously taken down the website of the Bank of Greece,” said a message from Anonymous in a video put up on YouTube.
“This marks the start of a 30-day campaign against central bank sites across the world.”
