Hyundai of South Korea announced on Friday that it had stopped running advertisements on X, formerly known as Twitter, and that it is having direct conversations over brand safety concerns with the Elon Musk-owned social media platform.
Reuters has requested a statement from the auto giant, but it was not immediately apparent why it has stopped running the ads on the website. In the meanwhile, X did not answer a Reuters request for comment right away.
The White House denounced Musk’s support of a “hideous” antisemitic conspiracy theory on X in November, and big businesses including Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, suspended their ads on his social media platform.
Civil rights organisations claim that since Musk bought the website in October 2022 and lowered content control, advertisers have left, leading to a dramatic increase in hate speech on X.
Media watchdog Media Matters has previously discovered that corporate ads for Apple, IBM, Comcast’s Xfinity, and Oracle were running next to antisemitic content.
