According to a research agency, Huawei Technologies has sold 1.6 million Mate 60 Pro smartphones in just six weeks, defying a slowdown in the smartphone market to experience robust demand for its high-end smartphone revival.
According to Counterpoint Research, of those sales, more than 400,000 devices occurred during the last two weeks, when Apple released the iPhone 15 on the mainland.
Sales of the iPhone 15 were 4.5% lower in their first 17 days than those of the iPhone 14, according to Counterpoint, without giving precise numbers.
There were no comments on the issue from Huawei.
With years of U.S. technological sanctions against the company, Huawei made a dramatic debut of its high-end Mate 60 Pro phone in late August. Many analysts claim that the phone uses a chip built in the country.
As soon as the phone is delivered, the limited supply is quickly used, “creating the appearance of perpetual unavailability,” according to Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam.
Due to weak demand for big brands, the whole global smartphone market shrank by 8% to reach its lowest third-quarter level in ten years.
In that time frame, the only brands to show year-over-year growth were Huawei, its previous company Honour, and Transsion Group.
According to the China Academy of Information and Communications (CAICT), smartphone shipments to China in August were essentially stable, increasing by 0.03% year over year to 18.99 million devices.
