Meta’s Threads Touches 100 Million Users, Traffic On Twitter Is Becoming Static

Since the debut of Meta’s text-based platform Threads last week, which has already crossed 100 million sign-ups since its debut, user activity on Twitter has decreased.

The U.S. version of Threads began on Wednesday, and executives from Meta, including Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, are praising it as a more encouraging “public square” for groups “that never really embraced Twitter.” Users appear to be on board so far.

“Threads reached 100 million sign ups over the weekend. That’s mostly organic demand and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet. Can’t believe it’s only been 5 days!” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post Monday.

Twitter seems to have suffered. A screenshot posted to Twitter on Sunday by Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince showed that the platform’s traffic was “tanking.”

The first two full days Threads was largely accessible saw less web traffic to Twitter than the previous week, according to Similarweb, a statistics firm that specialises in web analytics. According to the business, Twitter’s website traffic is down 11% from the same days in 2022.

An automatic answer was provided by Twitter in response to media’s request for comment. Beyond Zuckerberg’s post, Meta didn’t provide any more commentary.

The fact that Threads is linked to an already-existing social network, Meta’s Instagram, aids in its rapid growth. As more people download the app, users can sign up using their existing Instagram usernames and keep some of their following.

Even more quickly than OpenAI’s generative chatbot ChatGPT, which achieved 100 million monthly users in just two months, Threads reached the 100 million mark.

Since the app hasn’t yet been released in Europe, where Mosseri claimed there is still some legislative difficulty to negotiate, there is still a tonne of space for growth. If Threads can keep its user base,

It might strengthen its position as a legitimate rival to Twitter, which in its most recent quarterly earnings report as a publicly traded firm last summer reported about 238 million monetizable daily active users.

Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, seems to have expressed some alarm about Threads since in a letter to Meta, his longtime attorney Alex Spiro charged the firm with “unlawful misappropriation” of trade secrets.

Over the weekend, Musk and Zuckerberg also traded insults with each other as Zuckerberg made fun of Musk’s tweeting style and Musk referred to him by a disparaging term.
