In a news bulletin, BBC News said, IAG-owned British Airways is likely to announce the suspension of around 36,000 employees.
The development comes in the wake of the airline reaching a broad deal with Unite union that will include “suspension of jobs of 80% of BA’s cabin crew, ground staff, engineers and those working at its head office,” said the news agency while adding, no staff were expected to be made redundant.
Talks with the union are still ongoing, said British Airways in a brief statement.
On Tuesday, British Airways had said it is temporarily suspending flights from Britain’s second-busiest airport, the Gatwick Airport.
The development underscores the extent the Wuhan Coronavirus has ravaged the aviation sector.
