In a joint interview to the French news daily Les Echos, Walt Disney Co and Vivendi SA stated, Disney+ streaming service will be launched on Vivendi SA’s pay-TV business Canal+ platform by the end of March 2020.
Traditional media companies including Canal+ have come under growing pressure to find ways to bulk up their content in the face of growing competition from online streaming platforms such as Netflix Inc as well as Chinese-owned Mediapro.
“This exclusive partnership is a new major step in the transformation of the Canal+ model,” said Maxime Saada, Canal+’s chief executive.
Saada did not disclose how much Canal+ would charge for Disney+.
According to Kevin Mayer, who heads Disney’s Direct-to-consumer & International business, the U.S. group aims to acquire 60 million to 90 million customers by 2024.
Since its launch on November 12, according to data from Sensor Tower, an analytics firm, Disney+ has an estimated 28 million customers across five countries.
