The EU has made it amply clear that the ball lies in Brazil’s court. Its behavior will have to change its attitude for the deal to come through by late 2020.
On Wednesday, a senior official from the European Union disclosed, on the condition of anonymity, that the EU should be able to conclude a free-trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc of South American countries by late 2020. The source went on to add, that this optimistic scenario depends on Brazil’s attitude.
“Donald Tusk, the president of the EU council said it right: the EU is behind the deal, but the behavior of Brazil has a clear influence on the prospects for consent and ratification on the EU side,” said the official.
Brazil has come under immense pressure over its failure to deal with the forests fires that are ravaging in the Amazonian basis.
Mercosur’s other members are Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
