The initial launch of Samsung’s first foldable smartphone was delayed after some technical issues were discovered in it. Now the company says that the problems have been fixed and the phones would be available for sale in the market form September this year.
Samsung had initially announced the launch of the foldable smartphone – the Galaxy Fold, in April this year but had to abort at the last minute after sample phones sent to select reviewers and journalists were reported to have their screens broken during use.
Samsung said it had made “improvements” to the nearly $2,000 (£1,603) device which would be sold in “select markets”.
The South Korean tech giant and the largest largest smartphone maker of the world is very keen to commercially launch the foldable phone in the market before its rivals do so.
“Samsung has taken the time to fully evaluate the product design, make necessary improvements and run rigorous tests,” the company said in a statement.
The enhancements in the phone that the company has done include importing an extension of a protective layer on the screen so that users clearly understand that it should not be removed from the phone. The company has also further strengthen the hinge area with new protection caps.
Back in April, there were reports quoting sources from Samsung saying that one of the possible causes for the cracking of the screen of the foldable phones was that some of the reviewers had removed the protective film which they thought was a typical protective layer which most of the smartphones currently have when they are first bought.
For Samsung, which has been facing pressure from dropping demand and sale of its smartphone as well as pressure of competition from rivals which includes the likes of the Chinese etch giant Huawei, the defects on the foldable phones proved a source of embarrassment. In particular, Huawie has been a threat to Samsung ever since it became the second largest smartphone seller in the world. According to reports, the company now wants to launch its folding smartphone in September. The launch of its folding smartphone has been postponed by Huawei because it said that it wanted to undertake additional tests on them after the emergence of the screen problems of the Samsung’s foldable phones Galaxy Fold.
a prototype of a folding smartphone that transforms into a tablet was unveiled by Chinese technology firm Xiaomi earlier this year.
