Sun Valley Rice exported two containers of around 40 tons to a private Chinese importer.
In a significant development, USA Rice, a trade group that promotes the sales of U.S. grains reported, a private importer in China has purchased U.S. rice.
This is the first such purchase since the U.S.-China trade war.
The private Chinese importer bought two containers, of around 40 tonnes, of medium-grain rice from California-based Sun Valley Rice, said Michael Klein, a spokesman for USA Rice.
On Monday, following a meeting of U.S. President Donald Trump with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, China had agreed to make unspecified new purchases of U.S. farm products; purchases of major export crops have so far been elusive.
It is not clear whether the purchase of rice was a gesture of goodwill following the meeting.
Sun Valley Rice is hopeful that this purchase is not an isolated incident but goes towards laying the groundwork for more sales of U.S. rice to China, said its representative.
“Sun Valley has been a leader when it comes to agriculture trade with China, we have been taking the first steps,” said Karen Leland, Sun Valley’s chief marketing officer.
