Japan’s move to impose restrictions on tech exports to South Korea, is likely to impact the ability to purchase semiconductor materials, including flexible smartphone displays, by South Korean companies; the move is likely to be a reaction to South Korea’s demand for compensation for wartime labor.
On Monday, a senior official at South Korea’s trade ministry stated, Japan’s decision to tighten curbs on technology material exports to South Korea violates World Trade Organization rules; Seoul would respond firmly to the Japanese move.
“This export control measure by Japan is a measure that is banned in principle according to WTO agreements,” said Park Tae-sung, a senior official at South Korea’s trade ministry.
“We find such measure by the Japanese government regrettable,” said Park.
