The hiring is likely to boost safety issues in Waymo’s self-driving cars.
Waymo, Alphabet Inc’s self-driving unit stated, it has hired Matthew Schwall.
Schwall was Tesla’s main technical contact with U.S. safety investigators.
Schwall now joins Waymo’s safety team led by Ron Medford, a former National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Deputy Administrator.
Schwall’s work at Waymo will focus on a variety of self-driving car safety issues.
Schwall’s departure from Tesla comes at a time when Tesla is being investigated by the the National Transportation Safety Board for numerous crashes involving its electric vehicles.
Last week, the NTSB stated it would begin investigation into an accident involving a Tesla vehicle in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which resulted in the death of two teenagers and injured another.
This investigation will be the fourth probe by the NTSB into crashes by Tesla’s electric vehicles.
