With Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani visiting the U.S. the two leaders vowed to defeat terrorism, the steep hurdle that has to be crossed before Afghanistan’s riches can be tapped.
In a meeting in New York, U.S. President Donald Trump and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani agreed that U.S. companies could help develop Afghanistan’s rare earth minerals, said the White House in a statement.
“They agreed that such initiatives would help American companies develop materials critical to national security while growing Afghanistan’s economy and creating new jobs in both countries, therefore defraying some of the costs of United States assistance as Afghans become more self-reliant,” said the White House.
In a statement, the two leaders expressed their joint commitment to fully implement Trump’s new South Asia strategy to defeat terrorism.
