The New York Times has reported, Waymo and Lyft Inc have signed a collaboration agreement to bring autonomous vehicle technology into the mainstream.

The collaboration between the U.S. rideshare company and Google’s Waymo underscores the growing trend among companies to join forces in order to acquire, what many believe to be a multibillion dollar industry.

The development has significant implications for Uber Technologies Inc, the largest ridesharing company in the world.

Currently, Uber and Waymo are fighting a court a court battle over self-driving technology allegedly stolen by Uber from Uber.

The NY Times reported, the collaboration talks between the two began last summer in between Waymo’s chief executive and Lyft’s leaders and founders.
