United Ireland will leave Britain to join the European Union

This is the position taken by legal experts and is accepted by the current British government led by Theresa May.

According to diplomats attending a Brexit summit, the EU leaders should give a formal undertaking to ensure that the British province of Northern Ireland will continue to be part of the bloc in the event of a referendum united the island nation of Britain.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny had previously asked members of the bloc to acknowledge that like East Germany, Northern Ireland too would automatically enter the bloc in the event of unification.

Kenny is scheduled to request the 26 EU leaders meeting in Brussels to politically endorse a plan for Britain’s withdrawal. As per EU and Irish legal experts, this is the position in international law for such territorial changes.

“It would merely state the obvious, i.e. that also a united Ireland would continue being a member of the EU,” said a source close to the preparations at the European Council.

“The EU does of course not take a stance on the possibility of a united Ireland. Should this question arise, it would be for the peoples of Ireland and Northern Ireland to decide in accordance with the Good Friday Agreement.”

May Theresa’s government has acknowledged that in the event Northern Ireland unites with the Republic, it should be in a position to rejoin the bloc.

Leaders across the European Union, excluding British Prime Minister Theresa May, are likely to agree with Kenny’s position in the formal minutes of the Council.

Although the minutes are typically published only after a subsequent meeting, in this case, they are likely to be published immediately after the summit.
