Uber shutdowns the usage of its ‘Greyball’ tech

In a blog post Uber’s Chief Security Officer stated that the company “expressly prohibits” the usage of the tech to evade local regulators.

In a significant development, Uber Technologies Inc has made it amply clear that it does not tolerate the usage of “Greyball” technology to target regulators. This essentially ends a what-could-be a controversial program to help Uber evade authorities in cities where its services has been banned.

Joe Sullivan, Uber’s Chief Security Officer, wrote in a blog post that the company is reviewing the various ways the tech has been used and is “expressly prohibiting its use to target action by local regulators going forward”.

Last week, Uber had confirmed the existence of its “Greyball” program, which uses data from the Uber app and other methods to identify and circumvent officials who aimed to ticket or apprehend drivers in cities that opposed Uber’s operations.
