TransferWise launches FB chatbox for international money transfers

You can now transfer funds with friends and family through FB Messenger as long as they are located in located in Britain, Europe, U.S., Canada and Australia.

Competition in the digital payment landscape has just intensified: TransferWise, a money transfer company has launched a new service that allows users to transfer funds internationally though Facebook Inc’s chat app.

TransferWise, a London-based startup disclosed today that it has developed a “chatbot”, for Facebook Messenger which can help users communicate with businesses to carry out such tasks such as making online purchases.

The company’s chatbot can send funds to just about anyone from Britain, Australia, United States, Canada and Europe from Facebook Messenger.

The chatbot can also be used to set up exchange rate alerts.

Already Facebook’s messenger app allows users to send money domestically in the U.S. It has however still to launch the feature in international markets.

TransferWise said it will be the first to enable international fund transfers directly from Facebook’s Messenger.

In April 2016, Facebook had opened its Messenger app to developers so that they could further expand its reach.

The rise of artificial intelligence has made Chatbots a hot topic in enterprise technology in the last one year. Businesses, including banks, are hoping to tap the technology to reap in its benefits of cost reductions for their customer service operations.

Launched in 2011, TransferWise, is one of Europe’s well known fintech company that was started by two Estonian friends, Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann. Valued at more than $1 billion now, the company has the backing of several high profile investors including Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, Max Levchin – PayPal’s co-founder, Andreessen Horowitz of the Silicon Valley venture fund and Peter Thiel of Valar Ventures.

TransferWise has customers in more than 50 countries who send around $1 billion in transfers every month.

Although the company’s chatbox is currently available only for Facebook Messenger, it can be adapted to work with other popular chat services as well, said Scott Miller, head of global partnerships for TransferWise.

Miller revealed that the service will slowly expand its reach to other countries as well.
