Britain dependent on China to offset May’s Hard Brexit stance

For China, Britain is important since it aims to gain from its financial clout and use the country to showcase the fact that a first world nation supports its Silk Road project which is crucial for its prestige on the world stage. For Britain, China is crucial and a friend of the hour since May is hell bent on taking a hard stance during the Brexit negotiations.

With British Prime Minister Theresa May bent on charting Britain’s future through the minefield of a “hard Brexit” to offset potential trade imbalances, May has decided to dance with the dragon.

Britain and communist ruled China has pledged to promote free trade and collaborate on building an open world economy in efforts which have been termed as a “golden era” in the relation between both the countries.

Britain is banking to on signing a free trade agreement with China, once it leaves the European Union and both countries are keen to show that Brexit will not affect their ties.

In recent months, both countries have vowed to cooperate more closely in financial services, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi saying their collaboration will help promote projects such as the Hinkley Point nuclear power station in Britain and would help nurture their partnership on issues, including trade and high-level exchanges.

On the sidelines of a meeting of the G20 at the German city of Bonn, British Foreign Minister, Boris Johnson said that Britain will strengthen strategic cooperation with China on international affairs.

In a tit-for-tat move, May is slated to attend China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative to build a new Silk Road, its first ever major international summit that marks its coming of age on the world stage.
