Microsoft brings its Azure driven cloud computing prowess to the table of this alliance.
Renault SA’s alliance with Japan’s Nissan Motor Co has got a new partner in Microsoft Corp. Its expertise in cloud-based services will help the car manufacturers to build self-driving vehicles by 2020.
Microsoft’s Azure cloud service will enable advanced naviguation, over the air software updates and predictive maintenance to the car maker’s services.
By 2020, the two car manufacturers plan on launching more than 10 vehicles with self-driving features in the market.
Earlier this year in January, the alliance hired Ogi Redzic, a former Nokia executive to lead its connected car efforts.
Last week, the alliance reported that it would acquire French software developer Sylpheo, to add new services to its portfolio which will include among other the ability for ride hailing and car sharing services.
Of late, auto manufacturers have been investing in tech startups and in software firms to position themselves for the autonomous automated self- driving car market.
The traditional vehicle ownership model that has dominated mainstream in the past century is schedule for a transformative makeover, with ride hailing and car sharing set to be the future norm.
