VW has stated it will challenge the fine.
In a further blow to embattled German auto manufacturer, Italy’s anti-trust agency has disclosed that it has fined Volkswagen 5 million euros ($5.54 million) for having misinformed car buyers about the results of diesel emissions.
Italy’s watchdog has stated that it will impose the highest possible fine it can on VW while accusing it of marketing diesel powered cars loaded with software that lowered emissions to artificial lows.
Significantly, Volkswagen has said it will challenge the fine at an administrative court.
VW’s Italian division said, “[We] have fully cooperated with the utmost openness and transparency” and “are certain that the IAA-decision presents well-founded grounds of appeal”.
Germany’s biggest car manufacturer has been caught in a massive corporate scandal and is facing criminal investigations in South Korea, the United States and in other parts of the world over its cheating of diesel emission tests.
