Access to EU’s single market, ala Swiss Swiss Style isn’t automatic – French Foreign Minister

Before the negotiations begin, the British need to be clear what they want and who will represent the country in its talk with the EU.

Jean-Marc Ayrault, France’s Foreign Minister has stated that Britain needs to decide who will represent it during its EU exit talks.

Ayrault has made it clear that Britain’s access to Europe Union’s single market would not be automatic. That kind of an access comes along with the free movement of service elements, goods, labour and capital. Essentially it’s a packaged deal. There is no room for pick and choose.

“Absolutely Britain needs to sort out the problem of who represents it … from there we can work on an agenda and a calendar,” said Ayrault.

Meanwhile, David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, who led the Remain campaign, has said he will resign. He has however refused to make use of Article 50 of the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty and will stay on as Britain’s Prime Minister for three more months, by which time it is expected that the Conservative Party elects a new leader.

Aurault responded to Boris Johnson’s demand for access to EU’s single market but wants to create an independent policy for Britain as far as movement of people are concerned, saying, “There are countries with access to the market without free movement. It’s the case with Switzerland. It’s not automatic. There are a lot of subjects to discuss…. I think first we need to find out exactly what the British want.”
