Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for prevention of re-integrating Britain into the EU, if it decides to exit.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s Foreign Minister, has been quoted today saying if Britain were to leave the EU bloc, the European Union must prevent a reversal of re-integration of Britain into the European Union.
“Should the British opt for a withdrawal from the EU, then we cannot continue just doing business as usual with 28 minus one the next day,” said Steinmeier in an interview published by several local newspapers.
If Britain were to decide to exit the EU, it will have an impact on the experiment that is the European Union. The remaining members states will then have to do everything in their individual and collective capacity to prevent a re-integration into the bloc, said Steinmeier.
“We in Europe bear a joint responsibility for ensuring that we do not fall back into a nationalism of single states,” said Steinmeier.
Meanwhile in Britain, following a 3-day hiatus prompted by the murder of ardent Pro-EU lawmaker, Jo Cox, from the Labour Party, campaigning for the referendum has resumed. The man has been arrested for her murder, gave his name in court as “death to traitors, freedom for Britain” when he appeared in court on Saturday.
Ahead of the vote, 3 opinion polls have shown that the ‘Remain’ camp has recovered some of its lost momentum. The overall picture however has continued to remain one of an even split in the electorate.
The ‘Out’ campaigners have toned down their rhetoric, however the sticking point in the referendum has largely been defined by the economy vs the immigration debate.
Steinmeier’s comments come in the wake of Wolfgang Schaeuble, the German Finance Minister’s impassioned plea for a stronger, more unified European Union. He has warned that countries within Europe, left to themselves, will find it very challenging to fend of itself given the socio-political and environmental dynamics prevalent in the 21st century.
