Refugee crisis to cost Europe’s biggest economy 93.6 billion euros by 2020

A German magazine has reported 93.6 billion euros in costs for the refugee crisis by 2020, citing a draft report from Berlin’s Ministry of Finance.

A German magazine has reported that Germany has projected an expense of nearly 93.6 billion euros in costs in relation to the refugee crisis, citing a draft from the federal ministry of finance for negotiations among the 16 states that comprises the European Union.

The massive expenditure is likely to stoke further concern among those who are fuelling a growing anti-immigration movement. It could possibly have an impact on Germany’s own economy which sheltered more than a million people from war zones and Syria, in the previous year.

Although the numbers of refugees seeking asylum in Germany have fallen significantly this year, thanks to a deal between the EU and Turkey which gave Turkey a visa-free travel perks for its citizens in exchange for stemming the flow of migrants.

Der Spiegel, a German news magazine has said the finance ministry’s figures have taken into account the cost of integrating the refugees, their accommodation, as well as tackling the root causes why the migrants fled from their respective countries.

The incoming estimates for refugees have been pegged at 600,000 for this year, 400,000 for the next and 300,000 for the following years. Furthermore, the calculations of the finance ministry have estimated that 55% of those who have been recognised as refugees will have a job within a span of five years.

Although a spokesman for Germany’s finance ministry declined to comment on its projected figures, he however said that a meeting is scheduled between the government and the 16 states on May 31 wherein among other things cost allocation among the states will be hammered out.

As per the estimates of the report by the end of 2020, 25.7 billion euros, $29.07 billion, will be required for paying immigrants who don’t have a job and this will include the other benefits which are typically given for asylum applicants.

5.7 billion euros is likely to be required for language teaching courses and a further 4.6 billion euros will be required to find jobs for them.

The refugee crisis will cost a whopping 20.4 billion euros in 2020. Comparatively, 16.1 billion euros have been spent this year, said the report.

Already the federal government and the states are at odds over the cost of the refugee crisis and what should be Berlin’s share.

Germany has since long said that it would not be able to cope up with the spate of influx of the refugees and the burden it puts on its states. As per the report German states are expected to shell out 21 billion euros this year, with a 30 billion euros rise each year upto 2020.

As per the report, Germany’s states expect the federal government to shoulder half of the financial burden, which as per Berlin’s finance ministry, it does more than that. Berlin has now cast doubts over the correctness of the states’ calculation.
