As per the EU Commissioner, the EU equivalent of antitrust regulators had worked closely with its peers from U.S., Brazil and Australia.
Margrethe Vestager, the EU Commissioner opines that the aborted merger of Halliburton and Baker Hughes is significant, since it raises important questions regarding competition in Europe.
The merger of the oilfield service providers had perked up the interest of competition agencies around the world, with all of them noting the news of its abortion.
“In this case, based on the Commission’s in-depth analysis, the transaction raised competition concerns on a very large number of markets related to oilfield services provided to oil and gas exploration and production companies in the EEA,” said Vestager, who is in charge of competition in Europe.
She went on to add, “In this regard, a number of customers contacted us to raise issues with the proposed transaction.”
She also disclosed that the during the EU Commission’s investigations into the merger, it had been in close touch with a number of its peers, including the Australian ACCC, the United States’ Department of Justice and Brazil’s CADE.
