Job cuts by France’s socialist government and dealing with the company’s powerful unions will be the challenges Janaillac will have to face as Air France KLM’s CEO, to name a few.
As per a source who is close to the matter at hand, Air France-KLM’s board is all set to appoint Jean-Marc Janaillac as the group’s next CEO. Janaillac will be replacing Alexandre de Juniac, the outgoing chief executive.
The source clarified that Frederic Gagey would remain as the head of Air France.
Janaillac, a graduate of ENA and HEC, France’s elite administration business administration school held his first senior position in the airline industry as associate director general of the now defunct airline AOM in the 1990s. The sixty three year old Janaillac has been the CEO of multi-modal transport company Transdev since 2012.
Both, Transdev and Air France-KLM declined to comment on this development.
When De Juniac announced his surprise pre-term departure from Air France KLM, it caught many industry insiders by surprise. He will be leaving the company to lead the International Air Transport Association (IATA). He still had three years remaining from his mandate.
De Juniac said he was leaving the company since he had achieved his goals of reducing debt and ending its losses.
As per some sources who are close to him, De Juniac had faced significant hurdles in the form of conflict from the company’s powerful trade unions. While others who are also close to him give another angle: De Juniac enjoys only partial support from the Socialist French government over job cuts. This potentially troublesome issue could be a headache for his successor.
Incidentally, De Juniac served at the treasury under former conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy.
A source disclosed that Air France-KLM’s nomination committee has backed Janaillac, which paves the way for his nomination by the board.
